I have recently been introduced to the ancient Japanese concept of ikigai (pronounced ee-kee-guy), Rooted in Japanese culture, ikigai is often translated as "a reason for being." It is the sweet spot where your passions, talents, and values converge with what the world needs and is willing to pay for.
A fantastic way to review what you want to achieve, what you are after, and what could be your next steps to achieve your goals in a happy and fulfilling way. This elegant balance has captured the imagination of people around the globe, offering a road-map to a life imbued with meaning and satisfaction.
And so...without surprise...I wanted to learn more about it... let me share what I have learnt so far...
Ikigai is more than just a philosophical idea; it is a practical framework that anyone can use to find purpose in their daily lives. The concept is traditionally broken down into four intersecting circles: what you love (your passion), what you are good at (your vocation), what the world needs (your mission), and what you can be paid for (your profession). Where these four elements overlap lies your ikigai.
By engaging in activities that fulfil all these criteria, practitioners often find a deep sense of well-being and motivation.
Finding your ikigai involves self-reflection and a willingness to explore different aspects of your life.
Curious?
Start by asking yourself some fundamental questions:
What activities make you lose track of time?
What skills do you possess that others acknowledge and appreciate?
What issues or causes do you feel passionate about?
And finally, how can these activities and skills translate into something that can sustain you financially?
While the journey to discovering your ikigai may require patience and perseverance, the rewards are immense. By aligning your daily actions with your ikigai, you can lead a life that is not only successful but also profoundly fulfilling, purposeful, and full of joy.
